Four Elements ~ Water

Screen Shot 2016-09-02 at 10.14.45 AMThe Four Elements are the building blocks of all Creation on Grandmother Earth, and therefore, stabilize our world.

Water sits in the South of the Element Wheel.  Think of the many different ways that water appears on this planet. It can be raging rapids or a small quiet brook. It can appear as a stagnant pond or a great ocean. Given enough time, water can wear away mountains.  Contemplate the many forms in which you experience the waters on this planet and know that this is South energy. All South energies are fluid or have fluidity as part of their nature.

The waters within are reflected as our emotions.  Healthy, clean waters embody energy in motion, e-motion.  Do you have places where your e-motions are stagnant, muddy, and not life-giving?  Or, are your inner waters fluid, flowing, and clean?

Need to bring your e-motions back into a balanced state?  Take a moment each day to align with the give away and power of the element of water.  The fluidity of water will assist in bringing any unbalanced e-motion back into harmony.

Four Elements ~ Fire

The Four Elements are the building blocks of all Creation on Grandmother Earth, and therefore, stabilize our world.

Screen Shot 2016-09-02 at 1.04.53 PMIn the East is the element of Fire.  Fire teaches us expansion. It could be a small candlelight, or a raging forest fire, or the campfire which warms you on a cold night. Did you know that fire is a chemical reaction that emits light and heat, similar to the sun?  Or that Earth is the only planet that has enough oxygen that allows fire to burn?

Our spiritual aspect is the inner reflection of the fire element.  When we are fully aligned with Spirit, we expand into the creative potential of all life.  Our passion, hope, and joy are fueled by the strength of our spiritual determination.

What are you passionate about?  Do you starve your inner fires with restricting belief systems (withholding oxygen rich air)?   Or do you fuel the hungers that bring you pleasure and knowledge?  Think about the many ways you have experienced fire and you will know the East energies.

Align with the Fire Element and expand into the unknown.

Four Elements ~ Air

The Four Elements are the building blocks of all Creation on Grandmother Earth, and therefore, stabilize our world.

Screen Shot 2016-09-02 at 12.06.53 PMThe North element is Air or Wind.  The wind works with flexibility. Think about the ways you know the wind—from the whirling tornadoes to summer’s gentle breeze, or the wind that comes up just before a storm hits. Did you know that Wind, or air movement, is integral to all types of weather conditions?  Or that air pressure, which is largely caused by differential heating of the air by the sun and ground conditions (earth), controls the way air flows?

Below is another fascinating component of how wind interacts with the plant world on Grandmother Earth.  The article this was pulled from was called “The Necessity of Stress.”  We could also think of it as the ‘Resiliency of Flexibility.’
“The Biosphere 2 project was created as a research tool for scientists to study Earth’s living systems, and it allowed scientists to play with farming and innovation in a way that didn’t harm the planet. One of the most profound discoveries made by the scientists had nothing to do with a cure for some new disease or a new way of farming land. Rather, the discovery had to do with the wind’s role in a tree’s life. The trees inside Biosphere 2 grew rapidly, more rapidly than they did outside of the dome, but they also fell over before reaching maturation. After looking at the root systems and outer layers of bark, the scientists came to realize that a lack of wind in Biosphere 2 caused a deficiency of stress wood. Stress wood helps a tree position itself for optimal sun absorption and it also helps trees grow more solidly. Without stress wood, a tree can grow quickly, but it cannot support itself fully. It cannot withstand normal wear and tear, and survive. In other words, the trees needed some stress in order to thrive in the long run.” (https://travisma.wordpress.com/2013/12/12/the-necessity-of-stress/)

Our inner winds are our thoughts, beliefs and philosophies, or our mental aspect.  Are there places in your life where you avoid stress instead of viewing it as an opportunity to be flexible or build resiliency?  Do you miss chances to refine your character because of dogmatic beliefs or inflexible philosophies?

Think of the many different ways you have experienced the wind and you will know the North energies.  Take a moment to explore your inner voices, your outer words, and all that you believe in.  And know, as the breath of Wakan Tanka birthed the elements, our beliefs and words birth our reality.

Four Elements ~ The Void

Screen Shot 2016-09-02 at 11.54.05 AMIn the Center of the Element Wheel is the void, the black hole or womb. The void works with all of the four elements. In fact, it is from the void, the apparent nothing, the source, that all things take on substance within spirit. This is the Chuluaqui Quodoushka energy that was mentioned in the creation story. The void works with the energy of open heart to heart communication. It is the catalyst energy that makes and keeps the other elements in a state of balance or imbalance depending on how it is used.

Ask yourself… Am I catalyzing my life in balance?

Connect with the Void energy if there is a dream you would like to birth, a potential you would like to actualize, or to bring more harmony and balance into your life!

SunDance Story of Creation, part 2

Once the Everything knew its feminine and masculine aspects, the breath of Wakan Tanka birthed first of the four sacred elements, air. The second element was fire, the spirit of the Chuluaqui force of Wakan Tanka. Then from the space of its female and male side, WahKahn and SsKwan came together with the energy force of their separate Chuluaqui energies combining in a whirlwind serpent-fire of total love and the third element of water was created. From the two Chuluaqui energies came Quodoushka, the sacred marriage and union of the male and female energies which together become greater than the sum of the parts and thus became the heart of Wakan Tanka. Then seeing that the purpose of creation was discovering substance form through the act of orgastic pleasure in order to gain knowledge of itself, Wakan Tanka (WahKahn/SsKwan) made love and created all things within the Everything. Thus the fourth element of earth became the physical manifestations of the love energy of the Great Spirit

SunDance Story of Creation, part 1

Screen Shot 2016-09-01 at 10.29.41 PMEvery culture, every people since always have had myths, stories and legends of how life began. The Twisted Hairs’ story of creation is written in the records of the sacred kiva, their underground meeting place. Here, SwiftDeer retells that story.

In the beginning, since always, the Everything was created from within the Void in which there was present pure energy force called Chuluaqui. Chuluaqui is the primal and primordial life force of pure light energy that is the source of all light energy movement within all things of the Everything. We could say that Chuluaqui is the source of the force of Wakan Tanka. It expresses itself as pure orgastic, harmonic and balancing energy vibration and is, in essence, the spark of life that allows all things within the Everything to take on their particular substance form.

Screen Shot 2016-09-01 at 10.26.52 PMAs Wakan Tanka, the Great Spirit and Sacred Mystery which is called the Everything, took breath, it inhaled with implosive force its Chuluaqui and thus discovered its female being. This creative receptive force became the egg of all creation known as WahKahn, the Universe, our sacred Great Grandmother. Then Wakan Tanka exhaled and in so doing discovered its male side, the active conceptive force, the seed of all creation known as SsKwan, the Galaxy, our sacred Great Grandfather.

“The “power” of anything is its
essence and how it gives away and
touches others with beauty.

We gain clarity of who we truly are
in the wheel of life
through the reflection of the
powers of the directions.”

A Journey of Discovery

Screen Shot 2016-09-01 at 9.23.50 PMEach time we explore the world in which we live, we are taken through a journey of discovery. At times, we will see the overall picture identified simply as the four directions of a wheel. Then we will look through a microscope, as it were, and see the composition of the basic elements of all substance. Zooming outward, we will see their reflection in the seasons. Looking around in creation, we notice its many forms and we can identify the four worlds. And then we will look within again and recognize that those initial elements and four aspects or types of energy connect us to these four worlds. They are our teachers of energy, of being alive in balance and harmony with all that is. In the Sweet Medicine SunDance way, the “power” of anything is its essence, how it gives away or touches others and all of life with beauty.

This is information which, of course, can be told and memorized. Yet, when we explore our world through the eyes of a curious child, we open ourselves to the experience of discovery and recognition.

The World in which We Live

Screen Shot 2016-09-01 at 9.14.16 PMThe world in which we live is defined by the powers of four DIRECTIONS and stabilized by four basic ELEMENTS.  Our lifestyle is determined by the four SEASONS and our companions on this earth consist of four groupings or what the Sweet Medicine SunDance Teachings call the four WORLDS. Within us, these elements, seasons and worlds are reflected in our heart, body, mind, spirit and soul. Both inside and outside of us humans the POWERS OF THE FOUR DIRECTIONS manifest their beauty and power.

Each of the directions, elements, seasons and worlds sit in a particular direction on the Medicine Wheel due to the essence of its energy and give away of beauty.

What Wheels Tell Us

Screen Shot 2016-09-01 at 8.10.53 PM

Each position on a Medicine Wheel corresponds to one of the four cardinal directions: South, North, West, East – or one of the four non-cardinal directions: SouthEast, SouthWest, NorthWest and NorthEast. On any medicine wheel, the cardinal directions hold the energy of a circle and the non-cardinals move energy in and out of the circle.

There are also specific qualities & characteristics that exist for each direction. Thus, no matter which wheel is being used, the subject matter is placed in a particular direction because it contains the corresponding properties.  Every wheel has its own tune or vibration, part of the larger Song of the Universe.  Each individual wheel can be overlaid on top of the other. When this is done, the layers form a harmony to one verse of the Song of the Universe.
