The Natural Cycles of 24-Hour Time for Grandmother Earth

Grandmother Earth has her own natural timing, and like humans, goes through four changes within a 24-hour cycle. The following is a short teaching from the Sweet Medicine SunDance Path about how these four changes relate to the four directions.

sun-moon-northpole

In the South, there is Sunrise.

The earth is in a phase of exhalation, breathing OUT. This is the act of “catching of the spirit.”  Grandmother Earth is exhaling and being in the water and fluidity of self.

In the East, there is Midday.

Here is the time of recuperation for Grandmother Earth. Everything shifts and it is a “resting of the spirit.” It is the time of day when plant growth slows down, for plants rest within the heat of the day.

In the North, there is Sunset.

This is when Grandmother Earth begins her inhale. You will often notice that the wind will blow more strongly. This is known as “seating the spirit.”

In the West, there is Midnight.

This is when Grandmother Earth rejuvenates. She is healing herself. It is in the moonlight that plants make their greatest amount of growth. It is called the “calming of the spirit.”

Pay attention to Grandmother Earth’s natural cycles of time and how you feel during them. Our next post will bring out Sweet Medicine SunDance teachings on how humans experience these cycles.

The Center Power: Life Force Energy

In the Sweet Medicine SunDance Path, we speak about “powers” of the four directions. Within in each of the directions, there is a power …. an essence, a give-away, a “medicine.” It is their self expression of how they touch life with beauty.

In the Center is breath, known in other traditions as Chi, Ki or Prana … or what in the Sweet Medicine Sundance Path, we call Chuluaqui energy. This is the pure life force energy, which makes all life and all power possible. The center is manifested in the egg and seed of all creation.

The human aspect in the Center is our sexuality. We catalyze with the soul through sexual orgastic energy. Because this sits in the center and is a catalyst, the balance or imbalance of our heart, body, mind, and spirit depends on us having our sexuality in balance. The language of the Center is open heart-to-heart communication. We all know how key open-hearted sharing is within our sexual relations.

The East Power: Illumination & Enlightenment

In the Sweet Medicine SunDance Path, we speak about “powers” of the four directions. Within in each of the directions, there is a power …. an essence, a give-away, a “medicine.” It is their self expression of how they touch life with beauty.

In the East is the power of illumination and enlightenment. To illuminate our lives is to make clear, to brighten up with light, our instructions from the creatrix, creator. This gives us the enlightenment and the spiritual insight we seek. When we allow our spirits to expand, we can catch those insights which illuminate our life.

Compound the illuminations, and we can achieve enlightenment.

The human aspect which corresponds to the East is the spirit. Spirit is the “fire” within us that directs the mind. The mind receives our determination to materialize a body in this dimension. Spirit knows in “reality” what we have come here for, what our spiritual vision is. Step into the space of creating an original piece of artwork, and you will experience the movement of spirit through the essence of creativity.

The North Power: Logic, Knowledge & Wisdom

In the Sweet Medicine SunDance Path, we speak about “powers” of the four directions. Within in each of the directions, there is a power …. an essence, a give-away, a “medicine.” It is their self expression of how they touch life with beauty.

In the North are the powers of logic, knowledge and wisdom, balance, harmony and alignment. This is sound reasoning brought about by the understanding gained through actual experiences. This results in the clear perception of truth gained through good sense and insight. This can be received by a flexible, open mind whose intent is to be in balance and harmony with the other worlds of Grandmother Earth.

The language of logic, knowledge and wisdom is manifested through science, math and technology.

The human aspect of the North is the mind. Our mind should be an empty vessel, clear and open, receptive to incoming signals or information. It is essential to keep the mind as flexible as possible, seeing 360 degrees around the wheel of life wherever possible.

The West Power: Introspection & Intuition

In the Sweet Medicine SunDance Path, we speak about “powers” of the four directions. Within in each of the directions, there is a power …. an essence, a give-away, a “medicine.” It is their self expression of how they touch life with beauty.

In the West is the power of introspection and intuition. It is this energy of the West that is the place of going within and listening to the wisdom of the body knowing.

Mother Earth

Intuition is knowing what you know without conscious reasoning. The proper alignment with the four worlds of Grandmother Earth helps you gain the introspection you seek.

The human aspect of the West is the physical body. The body is meant to hold and transform energy. Then, like the earth, it must transform and stabilize itself. The physical body receives energy from the left side and gives away energy through the right side. This is true regardless of gender. The body is a storehouse of energy, storing it until such time as it is needed.

The South Power: The Importance of Trust & Innocence

In the Sweet Medicine SunDance Path, we speak about “powers” of the four directions. Within in each of the directions, there is a power …. an essence, a give-away, a “medicine.” It is their self expression of how they touch life with beauty.

In the South of the medicine wheel, sits the power of “trust and innocence.” Many of us have a damaged image of what we think trust and innocence is. Often we interpret it as trust and IGNORANCE. In other words, we prefer to be “stupid” about energy and do and be what everyone else wants us to do and be.

TRUST is the knowing that there is something greater than we are or than we know. A more sophisticated way of saying the same thing is, knowing there is an absolute interconnection and interreliability from ONE form of one thing to ALL forms of all things. In the words of the Tao, “When a blade of grass is cut, the entire universe shudders.” Trust is this kind of connectedness. Innocence is standing in the center of your own circle of “power” …. simply being who you are. “Inn – o- cence is to be in your own essence.”

The language of the South is best understood and manifested through the medium of music. One needs only to listen to a great  classical concerto or any music to see how it stirs our emotions and works with our heart energy.

The human aspect sitting in the south is the emotions. It is important to remember that all emotions are valid. To have balanced emotions means “ENERGY IN MOTION” … not to be emotional or to nullify the emotions meaning not to feel them at all. When we allow our emotions free movement, they have fluidity and flow like water.

The Power of Reflection

“The power of anything is its essence, and how it gives away and touches other with beauty. We gain clarity of who we truly are in the wheel of life through reflection of the powers of the directions.”

– Harley SwiftDeer Reagan

The Movement of the Wheel

In the indigenous world, “wheels” or circles have been used since the ancient times as tools for teaching the ways of the universe. Nothing is seen as linear, for the idea of linear is considered to be an illusion. There is no “beginning” or “end,” but simply a change of reference points.

Birth into physical existence is not the beginning of life (for spirit is eternally alive). It is a different perception point through which spirit experiences its aliveness.

It is simply movement in the wheel of life.

The Industrious Tribal Beaver

Happy birthday to all of the Beavers born from April 20 to May 20! For those not familiar with SunBear’s Earth Astrology, the sweet medicine of the beaver is to work with Grandmother Earth and Father Sky to create everything they need to industriously live in comfort with their “tribe.”

beavers

Did you know? Beavers are mostly nocturnal, work at night and have extremely poor eyesight but make up for it with their other senses. Their homes are called “lodges,” made of sticks and mud built in a dome shape to protect against predators. Efficient, industrious and communal marks the beaver.

After you watch the video, take a moment to reflect. Where can you add a little beaver medicine to your life today?

Forgiveness As A Ceremony

For many, forgiveness is an old-fashioned word associated with heavy memories of religious upbringing and rarely associated by the sweet relief from pain it is intended to produce.

The Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary states that  “Forgiveness is the act of forgiving. To forgive is to give up resentment of or claim to requital for (an insult); to grant relief from payment of (a debt); to cease to feel resentment against (an offender); to pardon (one’s enemies).”

The Twisted Hair Elders speak of forgiveness as dainishu (dah-nee-shoo). “From my heart, I give away any animosity, resentment, grievance, indebtedness, hostility, or hate and erase these forever from my circle of experience.” Life is restored to determinative understanding.

In the Sweet Medicine SunDance Path, forgiveness of the self, life and others is critical to our path to enlightenment and operating within Sacred Law to never harm the children of our planet. Forgiveness heals our wounded, fractured selves and creates a place for light and new dharmic possibilities to emerge from the darkness and pain of self-pity and karma.

If we desire an authentic, fluid, intimate relationship with ourselves and others around us, the first step is to acknowledge what needs to be forgiven and go into ceremony to release that which must be forgiven and released back to Spirit. We do this for ourselves, and we do this for the 7 generations before and the 7 generations to come.

To engage in forgiveness as a ceremony for yourself, we offer you this Flowering Tree Ceremony to do on your own with Great Spirit. Forgiveness – Flowering Tree Ceremony

Some of you may be thinking, “why engage with a tree?” In many cultures throughout the ages, the symbol of the Tree of Life has represented the soul’s longing for enlightenment and an interconnectedness between the “as above” and the “so below”. A human’s luminosity is very similar to that of a tree. Within this luminosity lie the keys to attaining the ultimate goal of formlessness as well as the ability to experience the essence of spirit. For these reasons, we in the Sweet Medicine SunDance Path often work with trees as a part of our personal and sacred ceremonies to help heal, grow and evolve.

For all of our relations and in beauty as the sacred humans of Grandmother Earth.
